The project guides on this site are the plans. They are on the open web, there is no download gate, no email required and no upgrade page waiting at the end of them. Each one carries a cut list, the tools it genuinely needs, honest time and cost bands, the step order, the mistakes beginners actually make, and how to finish the piece. You can read one on your phone at the timber rack.

What a usable plan actually contains
Most bad plans are not wrong, they are incomplete. Five things have to be present before a plan is something you can build from:
A cut list with real dimensions. Every part named, counted and sized, in finished dimensions. Not "cut to fit". Not a picture with arrows.
A tools list. What the plan assumes you own. A plan that quietly requires a table saw, a router and a pocket-hole jig is not a beginner plan, however simple the finished object looks.
Steps in the order you actually do them. Assembly order is not obvious from a drawing. A plan that shows a finished object but never tells you which two parts get glued first has left out the hardest decision.
Something that shows how the parts meet. A diagram, an exploded view, or a clear written description of which piece sits inside, on top of, or behind which. One good sentence can do this as well as a drawing.
The finish. What was used, in what order, and how long between coats. A plan that stops at assembly leaves you at the exact point where most first projects stall.
How to tell a good free plan from a bad one
Read the cut list before you read anything else. If the dimensions are vague, or the list of parts does not obviously add up to the object in the photo, close the tab.
Then check the thickness. A plan that never states the thickness of the stock it was built from cannot be followed accurately, because every joint depends on it.
Check whether the tools list matches the steps. If the steps mention a cut that the listed tools cannot make, the list was written afterwards, not from the build.
Be wary of plans with no failure notes at all. Every real build has a step where things go wrong, and a plan written by someone who has made the thing usually says so. Silence on that point tells you something.
Look for a safety note that names specifics: eye protection, clamping the work, guards left on, unplugging before changing a blade or bit. A plan that has thought about the build has thought about that too.
Finally, ignore the photo styling. A beautifully shot object tells you nothing about whether the instructions underneath it work.
How to read a cut list
A cut list is a table. Read down the parts column first and count how many separate pieces you are making, because that number tells you more about the difficulty than the finished photo does. A typical beginner cut list looks like this:

Three things to hold on to. First, sizes in a cut list are finished sizes, so you cut to that number, not to that number plus a bit. Second, "cut to fit" is a real instruction and it means measure the piece you have already built rather than trusting the drawing. Third, nominal board names are not measurements: a 1x4 (nominal) is about 19 x 89 mm in the actual board, and a 2x4 is about 38 x 89 mm. When you take a cut list to the shop, add the part lengths together, add a margin for the saw kerf and for one mistake, and buy the next board length up.

If you look at paid plan bundles later
At some point you will see large plan bundles advertised, usually promising thousands of projects for one price. Some are fine. A few things are worth knowing before you spend anything.
Check exactly what you get before you buy, in writing: the file formats, whether the plans include cut lists and dimensions, whether the measurements are imperial, metric or both, and what the refund terms are. Buy from a seller who will tell you that plainly.
Treat a big plan count as a marketing number, not a quality signal. Bundles are often collections gathered from many sources, so quality varies from sheet to sheet, and a thousand drawings you cannot follow are worth less than five you can. Nobody builds more than a handful of projects a year anyway.
And be honest about the bottleneck. For almost every beginner it is not a shortage of plans, it is cutting accurately and finishing what has been started. Neither of those is solved by buying more drawings.

Common questions
Are free woodworking plans good enough to build from?
Plenty of them are. What matters is not the price, it is whether the plan gives you a cut list with real dimensions, the tools it assumes, the steps in the order you do them, something that shows how the parts meet, and the finish. A free plan with all five is more useful than a paid one missing two of them.
What is a cut list?
A table of every piece you need to cut from your boards: the name of the part, how many of them, the finished size of each, and any note that matters, such as which face shows or which edge gets rounded over. You mark and cut straight from it, and you use it at the timber rack to work out how much board to buy.
Why do the plan dimensions not match the board I bought?
Because lumber is sold by nominal size, and the actual board is smaller than its name. A 1x4 is not one inch by four inches; it is about 3/4 by 3 1/2 inches, roughly 19 x 89 mm. Good plans state the actual thickness they assume. Names and stock sizes also differ by country, so check the board in front of you rather than the label on the plan.
Do I have to pay for a plan bundle to get started?
No. A beginner needs a handful of well-explained builds, not thousands of drawings. Work through a small number of projects that teach one skill each, and you will learn more than you would from a large library you never open.
