Plan and stock

I have the project guide or drawing at the bench.The cut list is a starting point; my copy records any changes.

I measured the actual boards, not the nominal stock name.Names such as 1x4 vary by country and supplier.

I marked the cutting and assembly order.Parts cut to fit come after the assembly they must match.

Tools and workspace

I read the instructions for the tools, glue, finish and fixings I will use.Product-specific instructions take priority over general guidance.

The work surface is stable, flat and clear enough for the full operation.Every workpiece can be clamped without a hand crossing the cut line.

The eye, hearing and dust protection named for the operation is ready.Loose clothing, jewellery and gloves are kept away from rotating tools.

I know which uncertainty will make me stop and ask for qualified help.Unknown wall services, structural fixings and unknown treated stock are not guessed at.

Before glue or screws

Reference faces, waste sides and matching pairs are marked.Repeat parts come from one checked master rather than repeated measurements.

The complete assembly has been dry-fitted.Clamps reach, joints close and parts fit before glue starts its clock.

The plan says how I will check square, level or fit.Use diagonals, a square, a level or the real mating part as appropriate.

Any unfamiliar cut, screw or finish has an offcut test.Test on the same stock rather than on the finished project.

Finish and handover

Glue squeeze-out and finish-rag disposal are planned.Follow the product label; never leave oil-soaked rags balled up.

The clamping, drying and hardening time comes from the product label.The project stays unloaded until those instructions are satisfied.

I will inspect the finished build before putting it into use.Movement, cracks, loose fixings or uncertainty means unload and investigate.

Scope, sources and limits

The checklist condenses recurring preparation points from this site's five live project guides and beginner safety guide, reviewed 14 September 2026. It records completion only; the progress display is checked boxes / 14. It does not score readiness, certify work, choose PPE or fixings, or replace tool and product instructions.
