Scan the five-build progression

Observed means copied or condensed from the linked project guide. Derived means a simple count of the quantities in that guide's cut list. No difficulty score, price average, load estimate or market claim has been added.

What the comparison shows

The sequence adds one constraint at a time. The phone stand keeps the stock and tool list short. The box adds squareness. The cutting board makes surface preparation and finish choice matter. The planter introduces repeat cuts and screws. The shelf is last because a wall, hidden services and manufacturer-rated fixings enter the job.

Piece count is not a difficulty score. Nineteen repeated planter parts may be more forgiving than five box parts whose corners must close square. Use the count to plan cutting, not to rank danger or skill.

Method and provenance

  1. The source set is limited to the five project guides linked in the table. Their front matter and cut-list tables were reviewed on 14 September 2026.
  2. Time, stock, drill need, clamp wording, taught skill and safety boundary are transcribed or condensed from those guides. Each row retains its exact source URL in the CSV.
  3. For fixed cut lists, piece count is the sum of the published quantities. The planter range is 4 + 4 + 4 + 2 + (4 to 5) = 18 to 19. The shelf range is 1 + (2 to 3) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 8 to 9.
  4. The cutting-board alternatives stay separate because one wide board and a five- or six-strip glue-up are different methods. They are not averaged.

The current approved search work supports practical beginner project guides as the format for this site. This dataset is a new cross-project comparison built from those accepted, live sources; it does not create a new market-size claim.

Scope, limitations and corrections

This is a comparison of one published teaching sequence, not a survey of beginners, timber prices, injury rates or the woodworking market. Stock names and actual dimensions vary by country and supplier. Time bands are planning descriptions, not measured averages. The table does not determine whether your workspace, tools, wall or materials are safe.

The dataset is reviewed whenever one of the five source guides changes; the review date and CSV are updated together. To report a transcription error or supply a correction, use the contact page and name the row and source guide.
